There are some significant differences in the band frequency spread, and also in how you set up a radio. You need to get a CEPT travel permit (from RAC) to use your hand-held while on vacation in the UK and Europe. The 2-m band is only 144-146 MHz, there are only limited VHF FM repeater pairs. If 2 repeaters are on the same frequency and relatively close, you use different sub-audible tones to get into the correct repeater. Finally, you must set your radio  deviation to NARROW band width. (Check your manual to find this setting.)
