CARHA

Canadian Adult Recreational Hockey Association (CARHA) Hockey Tournament

Official website: https://leagues.carhahockey.ca/pacificcup/home

The Pacific Cup Hockey Tournament is one of the largest and oldest adult recreational hockey tournaments in Canada. WARA has provided radio communications for this event since 1977.

Portable radio kits will be setup at nine arenas around town and radio operators will be handling low priority traffic in a controlled net. Rink operators will transmit final hockey game scores to a central location as well as post scores from games at all the other arenas. There are over 200 hockey games being played over the weekend. Radio operators do not need to know anything about hockey. Radio equipment is provided by WARA. New operators can request to be paired up with an experienced operator at a rink. This is a fun event for radio operators and an incredible experience for operators to work in a net environment with low priority traffic. Many operators sign up for the following year as soon as the event is over.

What to bring

  • Make sure to dress warm and in layers suitable for the inside of a hockey arena.
  • A pillow to sit on as the bleachers are pretty hard.
  • Pack enough water and food to last for the duration of your shift.
  • VHF mobile radios and antennas are provided to each arena. It is helpful to bring your own hand held radio to monitor traffic as you post scores or go to the washroom. Your handheld radio may not successfully transmit to the repeater from inside the building, but you can still receive from the repeater as you are walking around.
  • An extra pen. The CARHA documents will be printed out and present at the arenas.
  • Optional small binoculars to follow the action on the ice and to help read player numbers if there is an injury.
  • A cellular telephone is recommended in case it is necessary to call 911.
