WARA fulfills a public service function by providing radio communications and volunteers for events in and around the Victoria area. Volunteering for these events is an important aspect of your WARA membership.


CARHA Hockey

  • When: January 15-17, 2010 (Friday to Sunday)
  • Where: 12 hockey rinks in the Greater Victoria area
  • 80 volunteer shifts to be filled.

Times-Colonist 10 k Run

  • When: Sunday, April 25, 2010
  • Coordinator: Alan Mallett VA7AWM va7awm at shaw dot ca
  • Where: Start at Heywood/Quadra via Beacon Hill Park, Dallas Rd to Ross Bay and back along waterfront through James Bay, Finish at BC Legislature
  • 32 volunteers required for checkpoints, control, runner pick-up
  • Updated 2010 are emailed directly to volunteers

  • INFORMATION SESSION CANCELLED - Just show up for your shift. TShirts will be available on race day.

Swiftsure International Yacht Race

  • When: May 29-31, 2010 (Friday through Sunday)
  • Where: Ships Point, Sombrio Beach and other locations
  • Communications Coordinator: Peter Mills VA7STO
  • This event is coordinated by the Swiftsure International Yacht Race. Volunteers are asked to register via the Swiftsure web site (click here) and to establish contact with Peter Mills.
  • Communications Volunteers that are involved in this event come from Regional and Municipal Emergency Programs, Base Amateur Radio, WARA members, and the ham community at large

Ride for the Disabled

  • First Sunday in October 3, 2010, 0800-1330
  • Where: Metchosin EOC on Happy Valley Rd, and area
  • Up to 15 volunteers required. We meet at Metchosin EOC on Happy Valley Rd. Lunch is provided.

Victoria Marathon

  • The GoodLife Fitness Marathon happens on Sunday, October 10, 2010, 0700-1400
  • Communications Coordinator: Alan Mallett VA7AWM va7awm at shaw dot ca
  • Where: BC Legislature, James Bay, Dallas Road, Gonzales and Oak Bay neighbourhoods and Beach Drive waterfront
  • 40++ volunteers required for checkpoints, control, runner pick-up. The route goes all the way from the Legislative Buildings to Cattle point. It starts early. Because of the road closures, all volunteers must be on site by 0700. Volunteers get T-shirts. The Marathon committee has traditionally offered a $500 honorarium to WARA.
  • There will NOT be a radio volunteer Information Session prior to the marathon. All information will be provided from this web site and by email, or personal contact from the coordinator.
